Parish History
Introduction
The Parish of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Perth has been a spiritual home for generations of Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in Western Australia. Its history is a story of faith, sacrifice, dedication, and the preservation of Ukrainian Orthodox tradition far from the homeland.
Beginnings
The desire to establish an Orthodox parish in their new country of settlement already existed among many Ukrainians who arrived in Australia after the Second World War on ships such as Anna Salen, Fairsea, Mozaffari, and others that carried refugees from Europe.
None of the travellers knew exactly which part of Australia would become their new home. Although many transports were directed to Melbourne, some settlers were brought to Northam in Western Australia. There, a committee was quickly formed to organise church life and invite an Orthodox priest to provide spiritual care for the faithful in Western Australia.
Members of this early committee included V. Zub, I. Shorsh, T. Boyko, and Y. Hlyva, with additional assistance from Mr T. Datsko, who was a Catholic.
At the same time, Ukrainians who had arrived earlier in Perth had already begun to organise the Ukrainian community and work toward establishing parish life. However, finding a priest willing to come to Western Australia proved difficult.
The administrator of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Australia at that time, the ever-memorable Protopresbyter Ananiy Teodorovych, appealed to Fr Hryhorii Fomichevsky to provide spiritual care for the faithful of the UAOC in Western Australia.
Fr Hryhorii Fomichevsky arrived in Perth on 22 June 1950, and on 25 June 1950 he celebrated the first Divine Liturgy.
Formation of the Parish
On the same day that the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated, a meeting of parishioners was held during which the first Parish Council was elected. Fr Hryhorii Fomichevsky was elected chairman.
Members of the council included V. Zub, I. Shorsh, T. Bershchak, I. Omelchenko, N. Movchan, and T. Boyko. The Audit Commission included I. Dobrosko, V. Kravchuk, and V. Kvitko.
Initially Fr Fomichevsky was temporarily based in Northam, where the first parish and camp chapel were established. Mr Borys Tsukanovych became the head of the parish, and the first service there was celebrated on 2 July 1950.
The choir was led by Mgr Ya. Mykytyuk, who together with his wife made a significant contribution to the development of church life.
The Northam parish existed for one year. Services were celebrated alternately — one Sunday in Perth and the next in Northam. From May 1951 the Northam parish ceased to exist, and Fr Fomichevsky settled permanently in Perth, where work began on building a church.
Construction of the Church
The question of building a church became particularly urgent after the visitation of Archbishop Ioan and Protopresbyter Ananiy Teodorovych on 5 June 1953.
Three hundred pounds were collected in cash, and parishioners pledged a further 882 pounds. A plot of land was purchased for the church, and it was registered in the names of trustees: Fr Fomichevsky, P. Shlikhta, and A. Redko.
After Fr Fomichevsky moved to Melbourne in 1954, Fr Ivan Perelazny became parish priest. His contribution to the development of the parish and the construction of the church was very significant.
On 9 July 1959 Bishop Varlaam of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church arrived in Perth for a canonical visitation. On 12 July 1959 he consecrated the newly built church.
The church was built largely through the dedicated work of the parishioners themselves, who levelled the ground on a steep hill and constructed a small but beautiful brick church.
Further Development
In the following decades the parish continued to grow and develop. Parishioners worked to beautify the church and parish hall, organised community activities, and maintained strong spiritual life.
In 1968 Fr Valentyn Movchan became the parish priest and served the parish faithfully for many decades. Under his leadership the parish strengthened both spiritually and socially.
In 1983 a new carved iconostasis was installed. The woodwork was completed in Perth, while the icons were painted in the United States by the well-known iconographer Borys Makarenko.
Choir and Church Life
From the very beginning, an important part of the spiritual and cultural life of the parish was its church choir. As parish life developed, Ukrainian settlers made sure that the services were enriched by singing that preserved the tradition of Ukrainian sacred music.
The first conductors were Mr V. Kravchuk and Professor Petro Shyhymaha, a well-known leader in the Ukrainian community of Perth. For about thirteen years, Professor Shyhymaha directed the church choir while also serving the Ukrainian community and school.
After his death, the leadership of the choir passed to his daughter, Mrs Zoya Cherkasova. She began this ministry around 1968 and continued to conduct the choir for nearly fifty years.
Through her many years of service, the choir became an inseparable part of the liturgical life of the parish. The Shyhymaha–Cherkasov family also preserved many photographs and memories of the church and community life of Ukrainians in Perth.
Later Years, the Iconostasis, and Parish Unity
In the following decades, parishioners worked diligently to beautify the church and parish hall. Many families took an active part in parish life, and numerous laypeople served on the Parish Council, in the brotherhood, the sisterhood, and other parish bodies.
In 1983, with the arrival in Perth of the well-known iconographer Borys Makarenko, the Parish Council decided to install a new carved iconostasis with new icons. The wood carving was completed in Perth, while the icons were painted by Borys Makarenko in the United States.
The schism that had arisen in 1968 was officially and canonically resolved in 1985, when the parish fully returned to the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
The Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Saint Nicholas also played a major role in parish life, helping to acquire items for the church and organising meals, events, and parish celebrations.
Note
After the events of the late 1960s, when the parish was passing through a difficult period of change, part of its documentation and archival material ended up outside the community. Despite various attempts to recover these materials, this has not yet been possible.
For this reason, the present historical overview cannot include every detail of the parish’s history, but it does present its principal milestones. We sincerely hope that, in time, this history may be enriched further through memories, photographs, and documents preserved by the families of our parishioners and their descendants.
